Jed is simply trying to keep the family orchard for his older brother, who serves in the New Territories, earning the right to inherit the land. But his brother's time is up, and he has not come home. Jed struggles to hold on, but darker, colder struggles will come, high in the jagged mountain peaks, where legendary white-furred giants trod the endless drifts.
Anders, Jed's older brother, is captured by the feline sharlkan in the New Territores, and his life will never be the same.
Lars, Jed's younger brother, was born with the gift of the animen-sens, and is destined to be a great man, until the giant sasinok comes, and changes everything.
Tull, Jed's childhood friend, is a natural warrior and leader, and he goes to the New Territories to seek his fortune, only to find much more than he ever imagined.
The kingdoms of men are expanding into the wilderness. The aging ruler of Serandis has promised his throne to the son who claims the most land, and so the New Territories are born.
But the wilderness is inhabited by more than just the wild denizens of mountains and forests. They, like all creatures, obey the verrul, who take many forms; the cat-like sharlkan, the faerwalkers of the deep forest, the sasinok giants of the North Range, and others not yet seen by men. These masters do not relinquish their homes easily, and deep in their heartlands, there is a power rising that will change them all.
